Southeastern Grasslands Institute
Swan Conservation Trust is proud to collaborate with the Southeastern Grasslands Institute (SGI), a vital initiative of Austin Peay State University’s Center for Excellence in Field Biology. Led by Executive Director Dr. Dwayne Estes, affectionately known as the "Prairie Preacher," SGI is dedicated to raising crucial awareness about the threatened and rapidly disappearing grassland ecosystems across the Southeastern U.S. Their comprehensive approach involves engaging partners and securing essential grant funding for critical land acquisition and restoration efforts.
As a key project partner, Swan Trust plays an active role in our region. We assist SGI by identifying, monitoring, and meticulously managing or restoring valuable grassland remnants, such as the significant Prairie Barrens Preserve within The Farm Community. Our collaborative spirit was powerfully demonstrated in August 2019, when a successful bio-blitz, co-hosted with the Tennessee Native Plant Society, drew 30 enthusiastic participants. This event brought together six leading experts in plants, insects, butterflies, moths, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, all contributing to our collective understanding and conservation of these irreplaceable habitats.
